Ta’ziye

(Farsi. "mourning")
A Shīite religious sung drama, the only indigenous example in the Islamic world, performed during the month of Muharram and commemorating the martyrdom of Hossein, grandson of the Prophet. Dramatic roles are distinguished by mode (dastghāh). Drums, long trumpets, and cymbals may play interludes between dramatic recitations and laments.
The dramas may include processions of flagellants who sing metrically strong songs, timed to accord with blows on the back and breast, in antiphony.
